The Final Destination
The weather is starting to warm up and the daffodils are poking through – we have survived our first Devon winter! It has been a long 7 months since we arrived in May, leaving Justin behind in Munich. Being Mum, land caretake and teacher unfortunately didn’t leave time for posting updates, but with Justin making his final destination Lakemoor early December and Gracie back at school, things have really started progressing. So here is our first update of 2021..
The Goats
One bright December morning Justin and I were on our daily walk around Lakemoor assessing the tasks for the day. It was agreed goats would be the best solution for clearing the brambles etc. Within 3 days we greeted 2 beautiful Golden Guernsey goats called Elsa and Olaf. Their home is the horse box I bought to convert into a shower/toilet unit, but it turns out their needs are greater!
The rain
It rained and rained and rained and the river and ditches got higher and higher and unbelievably the water lifted our half a ton bridge and left it floating in the Lake field!
The Snow
After 6 years of white Christmases, snowball fights, building snowmen and sledging we were starting to feel homesick for Germany. So you can imagine our excitement when the snow finally came. Not quite deep enough to build a snowman but it still made Lakemoor look beautiful.
The Eggs
Surprisingly the chickens are still laying so everyday we get four beautiful free range eggs. But better than that one of the geese are laying, and even better than that (apart from the delicious omelettes) they are likely to be fertilised, so we have saved 6 eggs which have gone into the incubator on 14th January, now just 30 days to wait.
The Moles
The moles are taking over and I am on a mission to take back control. I have bought 10 tunnel traps and watched how to set them on YouTube. But, how come on YouTube they NEVER showed that they can go off while setting them and trap your fingers!! Finally got the hang of it and have had some success
The Future
Next is to get the poly tunnel’s up, food in the ground, fencing and a sty in the top field then off to market to buy 5 little pigs.
As far as opening the campsite etc. along with everything that’s fun, we are sadly closed, but working hard to get everything ready for a busy Summer! Follow us on Facebook for updates.
